Build a Block Tower Challenge!

Looking for a simple, budget-friendly activity that builds big skills?

The Block Tower Challenge is a fun way for kids to play while strengthening their hands, boosting coordination, and practicing problem-solving. With just a few blocks, cups, or recycled containers, children can turn stacking into a game that supports focus, resilience, and creativity.

What You Need:

  • Blocks, Legos, plastic cups, paper rolls, cardboard boxes, or any recycled containers (different shapes and sizes make it more fun!)

How to Play:

  1. Classic Challenge → Set a timer for 2–3 minutes. Build the tallest tower possible before the timer runs out.

  2. One-Hand Tower → Use only the left hand, then only the right hand. Great for strengthening both hands.

  3. Eyes Closed Tower → Try stacking with eyes closed or while blindfolded (with supervision). Builds body awareness and problem-solving.

  4. Direction Follower → Have a partner give instructions (“Put the big cup on the little one,” “Stack the blue block on top of the red one”).

  5. Team Tower → Take turns adding one piece at a time, working together to keep the tower standing.

  6. Wobbly Base → Start the tower on a pillow or couch cushion for an added challenge with balance and coordination.

  7. Story Tower → Add a piece and say one sentence of a silly story with each block. Encourages sequencing and language skills.

OT Skills Targeted:

  • Fine Motor Strength & Coordination → Grasping, releasing, and manipulating different objects.

  • Visual-Motor Integration → Matching hand movements with what the eyes see.

  • Problem-Solving & Planning → Thinking ahead to balance and structure the tower.

  • Attention & Frustration Tolerance → Staying focused, handling it when the tower falls, and trying again.

  • Bilateral Coordination → Using both hands together in a coordinated way.

  • Executive Functioning → Sequencing steps, following rules, and adapting strategies when things don’t go as planned.

Parent Tip: If your child gets frustrated when the tower falls, model calm responses—“Oops, it fell! Let’s try again!”—to help build resilience and flexible thinking.
