No Cook Gingerbread Play-Doh

Looking for a festive holiday activity that builds skills without turning on the oven? This no-bake gingerbread Play-Doh recipe is an easy, hands-on way to support fine-motor development, sensory play, and regulation at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour

  • ½ cup salt

  • 2 tsp cream of tartar (optional but improves texture)

  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp ground ginger

  • ½ tbsp ground cloves (optional)

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

  • ¾ cup warm water (add slowly)

Directions

  1. In a bowl, mix all dry ingredients.

  2. Add oil and slowly stir in warm water.

  3. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. Knead with hands for 2–3 minutes until smooth.

    • If sticky → add a little flour

    • If crumbly → add a few drops of water

OT Benefits

  • Hand strength & endurance (kneading, rolling, squeezing)

  • Bilateral coordination (holding bowl + mixing)

  • Tactile input with seasonal scents

  • Self-regulation through heavy hand work

Play Ideas

  • Roll and cut gingerbread people or shapes

  • Pinch “buttons” onto gingerbread figures

  • Use straws or toothpicks to poke details

  • Hide beads or buttons inside for finger isolation

Tip: For sensory-sensitive kids, start with tools (rolling pin, cookie cutters) before encouraging hands-on play. The scent alone can be regulating—or alerting—depending on the child.
