OT Cutting Activities for Kids

Ready to help your child build stronger hands and better control — without worksheets or frustration? Try these playful, OT-approved cutting activities that sneak in skill practice through creativity and fun!

  1. Snip the Fringe: Draw a bold line along the edge of a strip of paper and have your child make small “snips” to create fringe (like grass or hair).

  2. Cut Playdough Snakes: Roll playdough into thick snakes and let your child “chop” them into pieces.

  3. Straw Confetti: Use scissors to cut straws into tiny bits—great for color sorting or gluing onto art later.

  4. Cut Along Roads: Draw wavy, zigzag, or loop “roads” on paper and let toy cars “drive” along before cutting.

  5. Coupon Cutter Game: Give your child expired coupons or magazines and have them “find and cut out” items by category—like foods, animals, or colors.

  6. Craft Creations: Cut out shapes to make paper pizzas, flowers, or crowns. Add glue and stickers for fine-motor fun

  7. Dino Rescue: Wrap toy dinosaurs (or any small toy) in yarn or masking tape “vines.” Kids use scissors to carefully cut them free!

  8. Cut & Paste Collage: Have your child cut out pictures from magazines (foods, toys, or letters) and glue them into categories on paper.

  9. Cupcake Shop: Draw cupcakes with different frosting lines—straight, curved, zig-zag. Kids “decorate” by cutting along each line.
