OT Tip: Make Costumes Sensory-Friendly!

Halloween costumes can be exciting—but also itchy, tight, hot, loud, or uncomfortable for some children.

Try these OT-friendly tips:

Layer for comfort: Wear a familiar, soft shirt or pajamas underneath the costume.

Remove irritants: Cut out itchy tags, avoid scratchy fabrics, and check for tight elastic or seams.

Offer choices: Let your child choose between a few costume options so they have some control over what they wear.

Practice ahead of time: Have your child wear the costume for short periods before Halloween to get used to how it feels and moves.

Keep sensory supports handy: If the costume includes a mask, hat, or accessories that feel uncomfortable, consider skipping them or bringing headphones/other familiar supports.
