Outdoor Summer OT Activity: Sponge Ball Toss

This easy summer activity is perfect for hot days and helps build coordination, motor planning, and body awareness through play!

What you need:

  • A few sponges

  • Rubber bands or string

  • A bucket of water

How to make it:


Cut sponges into strips and tie them together in the middle to create a soft “sponge ball.” Soak them in water and get ready to play!

Ways to play:

  • Toss back and forth

  • Aim at targets or buckets

  • Play relay races

  • Squeeze water into cups or containers

  • Try throwing with one hand and catching with two

Skills being targeted:

  • Hand strength

  • Bilateral coordination

  • Visual motor skills

  • Motor planning

  • Core strength and balance

  • Sensory regulation through water play
