A Simple Shift That Reduces Power Struggles: “First–Then”
Mornings feel rushed.
Bedtime feels long.
Transitions can feel like constant battles.
If you find yourself repeating directions, negotiating simple tasks, or getting stuck in power struggles over things like shoes, homework, or turning off the TV — you’re not alone.
Often, the issue isn’t that a child won’t cooperate.
It’s that transitions feel hard, unpredictable, or overwhelming in the moment.
One of the simplest strategies we use in occupational therapy can make a big difference at home:
“First–Then” language.
What It Looks Like
Instead of:
“Go put your shoes on.”
“Clean this up right now.”
“You need to stop.”
Try:
“First shoes, then outside.”
“First clean up, then snack.”
“First homework, then screen time.”
Short. Clear. Predictable.
Why It Works
Many children struggle with:
Transitions
Delayed gratification
Stopping preferred activities
Feeling out of control
“First–Then” language helps by:
Making expectations clear
Reducing negotiation
Adding predictability
Showing what comes next
It shifts the focus from what they’re losing to what they’re working toward.
Keep It Simple
The key is how you say it.
Avoid long explanations or lectures:
“First we need to clean this whole room because it’s a mess…”
Instead:
“First clean up, then outside.”
Neutral tone. Fewer words. More clarity.
Add Visual Support (If Needed)
For children who need extra support with transitions:
Write it on a sticky note
Draw two simple pictures
Use a small whiteboard
Visuals can reduce overwhelm and improve follow-through.
Why We Love It
This small language shift supports:
Executive functioning
Emotional regulation
Transition skills
Flexible thinking
And it lowers stress for both kids and parents.
Sometimes cooperation doesn’t change because the child changed —
it changes because the approach did.
