Less Chaos, More Calm: A Better Morning Routine for Your Family
Mornings can feel rushed, reactive, and chaotic — especially when you’re trying to get everyone out the door.
If your child struggles with:
Getting dressed
Staying on task
Arguing through routines
Melting down over small things
It may not be a motivation issue.
It may be a regulation issue.
Why Mornings Are Hard
During sleep, the nervous system slows down. When kids wake up, their bodies need time — and movement — to fully “turn on.”
If we immediately expect:
Attention
Listening
Smooth transitions
Fine motor skills (zippers, buttons, shoes)
…we’re asking for regulation before the body is ready.
Try This Instead: 3 Minutes of Movement
Before breakfast or getting dressed, add a short burst of movement or “heavy work”:
10 wall pushes
Carry their backpack (even empty) across the room
Bear crawl to the bathroom
Jumping jacks
Push a laundry basket
Animal walks down the hallway
It doesn’t need to be long — just intentional.
Why It Works
Movement helps:
Wake up muscles and joints
Improve body awareness
Increase focus
Decrease impulsivity
Reduce emotional reactivity
When the body feels organized, the brain follows.
Getting dressed becomes smoother.
Transitions feel less overwhelming.
Cooperation improves.
Make It Part of the Routine
Try building it into your morning flow:
Wake up
Morning movement
Get dressed
Breakfast
When movement is predictable, it becomes part of the rhythm — not another battle.
