Does your Child Need Vestibular Input?

The vestibular system is one of our hidden sensory systems — it's responsible for our sense of balance and movement. Located in the inner ear, it helps us know where our body is in space and how we’re moving, even when our eyes are closed.

What does the Vestibular System Do?

  • Helps us stay upright and balanced

  • Supports coordinated movements like walking, running, or jumping

  • Helps control eye movements so we can focus while moving

  • Plays a role in body awareness and knowing the position of our head and body

Signs of Vestibular Sensory Needs: Some children may show under-responsiveness (doesn’t feel enough), over-responsiveness (feels too much), or craving (seeking) of vestibular input.

Under-responsive (doesn’t feel enough):

  • Seem clumsy or uncoordinated

  • Appear sluggish or low energy

  • Not notice when they are moving or off balance

Over-responsive (feels too much):

  • Get dizzy easily

  • Avoid swings, slides, or climbing

  • Feel fearful when feet leave the ground

  • Get car sick or motion sick often

Craving (seeking) input:

  • Constantly spin, twirl, or hang upside down

  • Seek out rough play or intense movement

  • Jump or crash frequently

Activities That Provide Vestibular Input:

These types of movement can help regulate, wake up the brain, assist with balance and coordination, and strengthen the vestibular system!

  • Swinging (back and forth or spinning)

  • Sliding

  • Rolling (on the floor or in a barrel)

  • Bouncing (on a therapy ball or trampoline)

  • Spinning (in a swivel chair or sit-n-spin)

  • Rocking (in a rocking chair or hammock)

  • Head tilting games (like animal walks or yoga poses)

  • Scooter boarding

  • Dance Break!

Vestibular input can be powerful — some children may become overstimulated or dysregulated if given too much too quickly. Always observe a child’s response and balance with calming activities.
