What is a Visual Schedule?

Have you ever told your child, “It’s time to get ready!” only to hear, “Wait…what are we doing?” Visual schedules can help make everyday routines easier to understand and follow.

Check out the blog for details.

A visual schedule is a simple tool that shows a child what is happening, what comes next, and when the routine is finished. It can use pictures, photos, drawings, words, or a combination of these.

For example, a morning schedule might show:

🛏️ Wake up → 👕 Get dressed → 🪥 Brush teeth → 🍎 Breakfast → 🎒 Backpack → 🚌 School

Why Do OTs Love Visual Schedules?

Occupational therapists love visual schedules because they give children something they can see and reference, rather than relying only on verbal directions.

Visual schedules can help children:

  • Understand and remember routines

  • Prepare for transitions and changes

  • Know what to expect next

  • Reduce the need for repeated verbal directions

  • Build independence

  • Support regulation during challenging routines

  • Experience success with completing tasks

They can be especially helpful during routines that happen every day, such as getting ready for school, bedtime, homework, mealtimes, or leaving the house.

Start Small!

A visual schedule doesn't need to be complicated. Start with just 3–5 steps and use pictures or photos that are meaningful to your child.

You can also make the schedule interactive. Have your child move, check off, flip, or remove each step as it is completed. This gives them an active role in the routine and helps them see their progress.

Ask Your OT!

Not sure what type of visual schedule would work best for your child? Ask your OT! Your OT can help identify which routines may benefit from visual support and create a schedule that matches your child's developmental level, communication style, and individual needs.

Sometimes a simple visual can make a big difference in helping a child know what to expect and feel more confident doing it independently.
